Tree Tips Spring 2006 Newsletter | Environmental Horticulture | www.treerx.com

Spring has finally arrived with all of its glory and now is the time to reflect on how important trees are to our lives.  What would our world look like without trees? How stark our cities and neighborhoods would become?

Trees provide us with a silent beauty, which we often take for granted but it is always in the background softening the hard lines of civilization.  They purify and enrich the air we breathe and bring freshness to our lungs that only they can do.  They become our quiet companions that demonstrate their strength in stormy times.  They offer their branches for our children to climb and swing upon.  They provide us with shade to cool our weary souls in the hot afternoons of summer.

Trees enhance our lives in so many ways yet they demand so little in return. Like all living things with just a little loving care we can help our trees flourish.

Timely Tips

Spring is the time that the soil temperatures begin to rise to the level that stimulates root activity.  The increase in root activity provides the water and nutrients that produce the new growth for the coming season. Humans are not the only creatures that look forward to the flush of new spring vegetation, many insects begin their life cycles in parallel with the surrounding flora.  The three most urgent areas of concern are the availability of water, the availability of nutrients and protection from predatory pests.

Root Feeder
Water is a prerequisite to all life.  Trees are capable of surviving with less than optimum soil moisture but this condition almost always leads to some form of stress.  First, drought stress can cause stunted growth or even tissue desecration.  Second, if the plant is not taking up water then it is not taking up nutrients.  Third, if a plant is stressed from water and nutrient deprivation it is unlikely that its natural defenses will be capable of fighting off attacks from insect pests, bacterial or fungal.

To avoid these harmful conditions a monthly deep watering is recommended.  There are many good ways to accomplish this but by using a GroCor Root Feeder you immediately get the water deep into the root zone.  See the Winter 2005 Newsletter for more information.

The lack of macro and micro plant nutrients can be the cause of many tree ailments, including slow growth, chlorotic foliage, leaf desecration, twig dieback, insect and disease susceptibility.  In situations where it is difficult to diagnose the specific deficiency the Medicap MD is an excellent option.  It contains 12% Nitrogen, 4% Phosphorous, 4% Potash, (all macro nutrients) and 4% Zinc, 4% Iron and 4% Manganese (all micro nutrients).

Acecap 97Insect pests are usually tree and location specific.  For instance, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana are experiencing the Emerald Ash Borer, the Northeast is entering another cycle of the Gypsy Moth, the West is in its 5th year of the Pine Bark Beetle and in the South and Southeast the Webworm seems to be a chronic problem.  Acecap 97 systemic implants is always a great choice to control these pests. It is effective, environmentally friendly, economical and easy to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When is the best time to use systemic implants?

A. Systemic implants can be used any time the tree is actively growing from early spring to late fall.  Early spring is ideal for the nutrient implants (Medicap MD, FE, MN, &ZN).  The Acecap 97 is most effective when the life cycle of the insect is taken into consideration.  For specific insect life cycle information please contact Customer Service by e-mail or telephone at 602.571.5001.
